Attendance
Our minimum expectation of attendance for all children at Maun is 96% across a full year.
In line with government and local authority guidance, children are expected to attend school for the full 190 days of each academic year unless there is a good reason for absence. Schools have a duty to monitor attendance and parents have an obligation to ensure children of statutory school age attend school. Non-attendance can result in legal action taken against parents under Section 444 (1) of the Education Act 1996.
Government Expectations
Schools and local authorities should:
- Promote good attendance and reduce absence, including persistent absence.
- Ensure every pupil has access to full-time education to which they are entitled.
- Act early to address patterns of absence.
Parents should perform their legal duty by ensuring their children of compulsory age who are registered at a school attend regularly. Pupils should be punctual to their lessons.
Our Expectations of Parents & Carers
- To ensure their children attend school every day unless the reason for absence is unavoidable.
- To report absences to the school before the start of the school day or nursery session, on the first day of absence along with the predicted date of return where possible. Parents/carers can do this by calling the school office and speaking to a member of the office team, or by leaving a message.
- To ensure children arrive in schoo on time and well prepared for the school day.
- To contact the school whenever any problem occurs that may affect attendance.
- To work with the school in ensuring that their child’s attendance is at least in line with the national figures.
What Parents & Carers can Expect from us
- Daily, efficient and accurate recording of attendance (absences are classed as authorised or unauthorised.
- Rewards and celebrations for good attendance I.E. weekly Best Team Attendance Award celebrated in assembly, half-termly whole school Attendance Lucky Draw, termly and annual attendance certificates for attendance of 98% or above (emergency medical appointments will not affect attendance awards where we are provided with copies of apointment letters as proof).
- A high quality education.
- To be kept informed of termly attendance figures provided at parent evenings and with annual reports.
- To provide support, advice and guidance for all aspects of school attendance through our designated Child & Family Support Worker.
- A staged response to managing pupil attendance as shown in Appendices A, B, and C. This may include a home-visit.
